Great band, shame about the name! I don’t know about you, but the title UB Hank Guitar Club Band implies that they an enthusiastic bunch of amateurs. The fact is, however, that this is an extremely accomplished band. You will have heard of Hoss as bassist for F.B.I. and the Black Albinos amongst others, and he is joined here by four equally talented guys including Walther on keys and Henk on drums. What really distinguishes them from all the other Shads wannabes, however, is their twin guitar attack of Martin and Gerard. Each will play rhythm to the other when necessary but their
ability to play twin leads, building harmonies and trading licks, adds a whole new dimension to the music.
This recording is not intended for commercial realease as it is a warts and all document of a performance at a German Cliff Richard Meeting on May 13th this year. There are remarkably few warts in their performance, however, and the sound quality is amazing considering the circumstances. I was impressed by an amateur video of an earlier performance and this recording confirms my belief that UBHGCB are going to be major players on the instro scene.      Alan Taylor
